Dublin Georgian North-East is a sociable walking tour this Sunday 16th August. It explores in depth and with some humour, Parnell/Rutland Square, the Rotunda Lying- In Hospital, then further afield, the north and eastern sections of the magnificent old “Gardiner estate”.
We’ll explore the complex history of Parnell/Rutland Square, including the pivotal place of the Rotunda Lying-In Hospital within that history,
Included in our discussion are the buildings we now call the Ambassador and the Gate Theatre, with their complex but fascinating history of conception, construction, décor and design.
Then we’ll explore and discuss likewise: Charlemont House; Granby Row and Lane; Mary’s Place and so on, winding slowly north and east, to Eccles Street and beyond with old, vanished churches and plenty of other hidden secrets all along the way!
Throughout it all, we will explore, discuss and contemplate the extraordinary ambition, and ultimately doomed vision, of the stunning old Gardiner estate. By the end of the tour, guests may conclude that it’s Dublin’s most forgotten, underrated and neglected treasure, yet still our most precious asset, even now.

Practicalities: the Meeting Place is outside the Ambassador Theatre, at the very top of O’Connell Street. Meeting from 2.05pm, tour starts/departs 2.15pm sharp. Have done two of these tours so far and I have to say it was not only educational but also very entertaining.
Arran (the guide) has not only a great knowledge of our city but also a great passion for it.
Could not recommend highly enough, so do yourself a favour and book one of these tours for a slice of Dublin knowledge, wit and banter….

heading into Dublin today for this tour. I did the Dublin West tour last summer and am really looking forward to this one. Having attending school in North Great Georges street I am really looking forward to this one!!!

Would love to be there. I lived in Hardwicke Street for the month of January 2008 and loved it around that area. I miss the quirky Dorset Street pubs in particular 🙂
