View of Dublin Customs House Burning

25 May 1921, Dublin, Ireland — Original caption: On May 25, 1921, the Dublin Customs House, one of the most valuable and beautiful buildings in the British Isles, was “rushed” by armed Sinn Feinners and set on fire. Before night, the building was completely gutted and many persons were dead, shot in the pitched battles between guards and attackers. Here, the apparatus to fight the fire is arriving shortly after it was started and before the dome fell. — Image by © Underwood & Underwood/Corbis
